Bombed oil facilities release dense clouds of toxic smoke into the atmosphere. Fuel leaks seep into soil and water systems. Entire ecosystems are disrupted in ways that aren’t immediately visible but have long-term consequences. These pollutants don’t stay contained within borders - they travel, affecting air quality, marine life, and communities far beyond the conflict zone. And even when the war ends, the damage doesn’t. Rebuilding cities and infrastructure requires immense energy, creating yet another wave of emissions long after the headlines have moved on.

What makes this even more difficult to reconcile is the scale at which this is happening compared to the individual responsibility we’re often asked to carry. We’re told to be mindful - to reduce waste, to recycle, to make better choices. And those things do matter. But at the same time, global military activity is estimated to contribute around 5.5% of total greenhouse gas emissions - a number that often goes unspoken and, in many cases, unaccounted for.

It can make everything feel a little futile.

But maybe it isn’t.

Because while we can’t control the systems that drive conflict, we can control how we show up within the world around us. The choices we make - what we buy, what we support, what we create - still hold meaning.
